I also think that it is a very common misconception that the bulk of costs for pharmecueticals is reasearch on drugs. Also a common misconception that nothing would be invented without the free market. Most inventors (and scientists) that I know or have read about seem to be propelled by discovery itself rather than money or fame or success. The outrageous prices/inhuman marketing and disregard for human life comes from BUSINESS people, not reasearchers. But these businesspeople are supremely effective at marketing themselves as the good guys with "regrettable" effects (like dying) that just cant be helped or solved.
